Exploring The Grand Canyon West Rim

Exploring The Grand Canyon West Rim

The Grand Canyon was carved over some 6 million years. Geological activity and erosion by the Colorado River created the Grand Canyon as we know it today. It is one of the most studied landscapes in the world, with extensive fossil records, a multitude of geologic features and rich archeological history. Grand Canyon is considered one of the finest examples of arid-land erosion in the world. Incised by the Colorado River, the canyon is immense, averaging 4,000 feet deep for its entire 277 miles. It is 6,000 feet deep at its deepest point and 18 miles at its widest. The canyon measures over 270 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep, making it one of the biggest canyons in the world. This natural landmark formed about five to six million years as erosion from the Colorado River cut a deep channel through layers of rock.

Grand Canyon West:
The West Rim is also home to the famous Grand Canyon Skywalk (right). This open-air glass cantilevered bridge was built by the Hualapai Indians and opened in 2007. Extending 70 feet out from the edge of Eagle Point, the Skywalk offers views 4,000 feet down into the Grand Canyon through 5 layers of glass.
Grand Canyon West is a tribal enterprise of the sovereign Indian Nation of the Hualapai Tribe. When you visit Grand Canyon West, you are entering the Hualapai Reservation where you can experience their heritage and rich traditions. Learn more about the tribe and the experiences awaiting you at Grand Canyon West.
Bucket List Deals at Grand Canyon West is more than just the West Rim. Here, you’ll find two distinct destinations, each offering unique opportunities for exploration. For scenic vistas, ziplining, helicopter tours, the Skywalk, and smooth floats down the Colorado River, head to the West Rim. If whitewater rapids are more your speed, check out one- or two-day whitewater rafting trips, which depart from our lodge in Peach Springs, AZ about a two hour drive from the Rim. Hualapai Lodge on Route 66 is worthy of a stop even if you don’t plan to splash down the river. Comfortable amenities, a fantastic restaurant, and a trading post with gifts and souvenirs await.

Skywalk:
Unparalleled views of one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders await you at Grand Canyon West on Skywalk. This breathtaking 10-foot wide, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge extends 70 feet out over the rim of the Grand Canyon, giving you a clear view 4,000 feet to the Canyon floor below. There’s simply no thrill like stepping out on glass thousands of feet in the air, yet there’s no need to be nervous — Skywalk is strong enough to hold seventy fully loaded 747 passenger jets.

White Water Rafting in the Grand Canyon:
White water rafting is a thrilling way to experience the Grand Canyon, and whitewater rafting at Grand Canyon West is truly an experience like no other. Hualapai River Runners offers 1-day, 2-day, and 5-day whitewater rafting tours. In addition to exciting rapids, hiking at Travertine Cavern Falls, local wildlife viewing, and lunch along the banks of the river, participants will learn about the Hualapai Tribe and their connection to the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.

Zip Line at Grand Canyon West:

3,200 feet of heart pumping, windblown, adrenaline rush. The Zip Line is one of the many activities available at the Hualapai Ranch, about a mile from the world-famous Grand Canyon Skywalk. Soar 500 feet above the floor of a spectacular side canyon as the terrain rushes by. With two runs and four lines per run you will be able to enjoy the ride with friends and family. Take your GoPro or cell phone (at your own risk) and capture the ride on video!
