What Can I See From The Blue Ridge Mountains?

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a physiographic province of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. The mountain range is located in the Eastern United States, and extends 550 miles southwest from southern Pennsylvania through Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.

How many mountains are in the Blue Ridge Mountains? With about 125 peaks of 5,000+ feet in elevation, the Blue Ridge is home to many of the highest mountains in eastern North America. The highest peak in the Blue Ridge range is Mount Mitchell, NC, at 6,684 feet, whose breathtaking views of the region span as far as 85 miles on a clear day!

What is the Blue Ridge Parkway? The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway and All-American Road in the United States, noted for its scenic beauty. The parkway, which is America’s longest linear park, runs for 469 miles through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of our favorite places to explore in the South and you’ll quickly see why. What Mountains Are In The Blue Ridge?

Mount Mitchell

Mount Mitchell, known in Cherokee as Attakulla, is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland eastern North America. It is located near Burnsville in Yancey County, North Carolina; in the Black Mountain subrange of the Appalachians, about 19 miles northeast of Asheville. Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet above sea level, is the highest point in the eastern United States. Located in the Black Mountain range of the Southern Appalachians, it is part of an intricate mountain system featuring some of the oldest and most complex geological formations on earth.

Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains are a mountain range rising along the Tennessee–North Carolina border in the southeastern United States. They are a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains, and form part of the Blue Ridge Physiographic Province. Called the Smokies due to the ever-present morning fog, this mountain range is world renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and its history of southern Appalachian mountain culture.

Clingmans Dome

Clingmans Dome is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina in the southeastern United States. Its name in Cherokee is Kuwahi or Kuwohi, meaning “mulberry place.” How long is the walk up Clingmans Dome? It’s seven miles to the end of Clingmans Dome Road and scenic pullouts offer endless views of ridges and valleys along the way. The road ends in a large parking area from which a 0.5-mile trail leads to the summit. The trail is paved but steep, and leads to an observation tower on top.

Waterrock Knob

Waterrock Knob is a mountain peak in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is the highest peak in the Plott Balsams and is the 16th-highest mountain in the Eastern United States. The mountain is a popular destination with tourists and amateur hikers, as it is easily accessible from the parkway. Why is it called Waterrock Knob? Waterrock Knob gets its name from a cool stream that emerged from a rock, where hunters, traders farmers and Cherokee Indians used to stop to get a cool drink of water along a Cherokee trading trail that went through the area.

Grand Father Mountain

Grandfather Mountain is a mountain, a non-profit attraction, and a North Carolina state park near Linville, North Carolina. At 5,946 feet, it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains. Grandfather Mountain is a place of amazing biodiversity and scenic beauty that towers 5,946 feet above northwest North Carolina. A part of the United Nations’ Southern Appalachian Biosphere Reserve, the mountain is estimated to be 300 million years old — with certain rock formations dating back 1.2 billion years.

Brasstown Bald

Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border between Towns and Union counties south of the city of Hiawassee. The mountain is known to the native Cherokee people as Enotah. You can reach the top of Brasstown Bald by car or on foot. Visitors with climbing experience and a sense of adventure typically choose to hike the Brasstown Bald Summit Trail, a steep half-mile trek with a paved footpath.
