Aspen, in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, is a ski resort town and year-round destination for outdoor recreation. It’s also known for high-end restaurants and boutiques, and landmarks like the Wheeler Opera House, built in 1889 during the area’s silver mining boom. The Wheeler-Stallard House is a local history museum set in a 19th-century, Queen Anne–style home, while the Aspen Art Museum displays contemporary artworks. This small mountain community is famous for the four Aspen ski areas surrounding the town (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk), and even more adventure awaits once the snow melts and the greenery emerges.

Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is in the south-central part of the state on the Cook Inlet. It’s known for its cultural sites, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which displays traditional crafts, stages dances, and presents replicas of dwellings from the area’s indigenous groups. The city is also a gateway to nearby wilderness areas and mountains including the Chugach, Kenai and Talkeetna. Anchorage is best known for trails, wildlife, and glaciers, and it is the state’s cultural soul as well. The city is home to more artists and musicians than any other place in Alaska.

Bismarck is the capital city of North Dakota. The tall, art deco North Dakota State Capitol is set on landscaped grounds. Nearby, the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum traces the state’s natural and cultural history. North Dakota tops the list of coldest states in winter and fall, based on state-wide average temperatures. The North Dakota winter season usually begins in late November and continues until late March. On average, the state experiences three to four severe winter storms each year. Winter precipitation is nearly all in the form of snow and is often associated with strong winds and low temperatures.

Whitefish is a resort town in the Rocky Mountains of northwest Montana. It’s a gateway to the jagged peaks, lakes and glacier-carved valleys of Glacier National Park. Ski and mountain-bike trails wind downhill at Whitefish Mountain Resort, just outside town. On Whitefish Lake, sandy City Beach and Whitefish Lake State Park have boat launches and picnic areas. Downtown, shops and eateries line Central Avenue. Whitefish is one of the best ski towns in the country. Whitefish Mountain Resort consistently finds itself in the top 10 of SKI Magazine’s annual “Best Ski Resorts in the West” ranking, and for good reason. But the party doesn’t stop at Big Mountain.
